On Merging Command Selection and Direct Manipulation
We present the results of a study comparing the relative benefits of three command selection techniques that merge command selection and direct manipulation: one twohanded technique, Toolglass [2], and two one-handed techniques, control menus [15] and FlowMenu [6]. Our results show that control menus and FlowMenu are significantly faster than Toolglass. Further analysis suggests that merging co...
Impact of Handedness and Merging in Command Selection Speed
We explore the influence of handedness and the way command selection is integrated with direct manipulation on the speed of command selection. Two empirical studies provide converging evidence that it is the merging of command selection and direct manipulation that benefits performance most, and this is especially effective in a single-handed technique. These findings provide empirical evidence...

Better Realising Direct Manipulation
Direct Manipulation is an approach to designing user interfaces, which forms the basis of Graphical User Interfaces. Despite the importance of the concept, no mathematical model of Direct Manipulation has yet been developed. This paper proposes a model of Direct Manipulation, which relates cognitive distance with user familiarity and the novel concepts of “tech bias”, “velocity” and “inertia”.
Direct Manipulation Interfaces
Direct manipulation has been lauded as a good form of interface design, and some interfaces that have this property have been well received by users. In this article we seek a cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces. We identify two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness. One deals with the information processing dis...
